Anatomy of The Spine
The Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is essentially a “cable of specialized nerves and nervous tissues which extending from the brain down through a bony tunnel (spinal canal) in the spinal column. The spinal cord is the main “cable in the body. The spinal column is formed by the vertebrae and the intervertebral discs. A pair of nerve roots divides off of the spinal cord and exits though an opening on each side of the spine referred to as neuroforamen. The spinal nerves exit the spine to supply the trunk, arms and legs. Each spinal nerve consists of nerve fibers that go to muscle (motor fibers) and nerve fibers which carry sensory information to the brain.
